Germany: cultivation area for pumpkins extended

In 2013 almost 60,000 tonnes of consumption pumpkins were harvested in Germany, reports the German website Fruchthandel.de. This means that almost 14% less consumption pumpkins were harvested compared to 2012, whilst the cultivation rose by almost 12% to around 2,900 hectares at the same time.

The pumpkin area in 2006 was almost half this size in 2006, with 1,200 hectares, reports the German Bureau for Statistics (Destatis). The largest cultivation areas for consumption pumpkins in Germany can be found in the states Bayern and Baden-Württemberg. Together, they make up almost half of the total German pumpkin area.
