French garlic aims to increase market share

Jardins du Midi is a French company specialised in the production and sale of garlic, onion and shallots. It has partnership agreements with shallot and pink onion growers in Brittany and with garlic producers in southern France.

“We are based near Toulouse, which is France’s historical garlic-producing area,” says Sylvie Combes Revel, exports manager of the firm. “In Lautrec, for example the specialty is pink garlic. We also import from Argentina and New Zealand during the French off-season.”

Overall demand for garlic is good. In France, Jardins du Midi distributes to all main retailers, like Carrefour, Leclerc, or Casino, “but we also sell to wholesalers, for which we have a special branch, as well as to caterers.”

The company was present at the recent edition of MacFrut with the goal of increasing its market share in the Italian market, mainly with white garlic. Sylvie states that “although Italy also has its own production, each country offers its own specialties, and the quality of French garlic is well-appreciated.”

In French stores, Jardins du Midi offers a very exclusive 2.5 kilo packaging, designed to ensure the product’s freshness.

Competition with countries like China, Spain or Argentina in the coming season is expected to be fierce, partly due to pressure from Spanish garlic, which will not have access to Russia. “Thus, we try to make the difference with the quality, presentation and packaging of our products, trying to be innovative and to bring new ideas into the market,” concludes Sylvie Combes Revel.
