Mexico: Chihuahua produces 65% of national nut production

Nogamex is a group of Pecan producers that have associated to buy and sell their products, thereby avoiding middlemen and achieving better prices.

The company's functions include using their economic resources to grant producers direct loans, AVIO, secured and simple loans.

The company offers agricultural insurance via its subsidiary, Agricola Paquime Assurance Fund. It should be noted that the company partners have access to specialized funds for planting, investing, marketing and working capital.

Similarly, they have support and linking programs with the public sector.

Gustavo Vazquez, CEO of Nogamex, said Mexico produced 33% of world production, and the state of Chihuahua produced 65% of national production. Chihuahua, Georgia, New Mexico and Texas are the most important global producers.

Vasquez stated the association had brought together 143 Pecan producers from the northwestern region of the state, and that they had two collection centres and that they were mainly focused on exporting.

"We support the industry's financial sector, looking for crop insurance, transportation, inputs and walnut inventory. We are trying to run an industry, and have been working hard for the past two years looking for business partnerships," he said.

"Now, we're looking for working capital, as the collection of walnut is quite expensive, to support producers who believe in the association," he added.

"Nogamex works so producers have a higher profit margin, without intermediaries, we have direct negotiations with buyers in China and England, among others," he continued.

He noted that the United States didn't need the Mexican product because they supplied 55% of the world production, followed by Mexico, which accounted for 33% of the world production.

"The idea is to sell our products together, so we can enter the market directly, without intermediaries; and it's already happening, we have multiple connections that we're working with," he said.

"We have to commit the producers with the trade association so we can sell their products via a limited company (SA), so each producer is an equity partner and has some shares in the business," he said.

Vasquez noted that, "We are a guild of Civil Association (AC), but in order to sell we are a marketing company (SA), is what makes us stronger at the national and international level."

He also stated that the quality of the nut in the Northwest was superb, and that the area had been declared free of pests and diseases, "we're trying to have an ecological production, there are no pesticide residues of any kind in our nuts, and that is highly appreciated by the foreign customers," he said.
