United Arab Emirates' largest potato producer, Elite Agro, is benefiting from the Russian ban on European fruit and vegetables. The company produces around 400 tonnes of fresh produce per day, according to Sales & Marketing Manager James Varghese. They also produce speciality tomatoes, bell peppers and various greenhouse vegetables.
"Russia is a very important market for us, it is one of the biggest markets for us for potatoes this year. Even before the current ban, we were planning to export Potatoes to Russia."
However, the exporter also sees problems with sending produce to the Russian market.
"Although it has excluded the European competition, we will now have competition from other countries, such as China, Pakistan, Morocco, Egypt and India. African countries will benefit from this ban too. So we may not see a huge increase in our export, but we will certainly see some.
"Of course, the problem with Russia is also often getting buyers to pay. The collection of money there is not that easy. If the market is good, they will give you the money, if not, they will start to complain."
