Lidl hot on heels of Google as ideal graduate workplace

Tech giant Google is the ideal place for students to work once they leave education, according to a major new study.

However, discount retailer Lidl is quickly shooting up graduates' wish lists after climbing to fourth, up from 21st in last year's rankings.

The survey by, which offers career advice to graduates, polled almost 8,000 students in both Northern Ireland and the Republic. It saw financial firm Deloitte take the second spot while consultancy companies Accenture and PwC rounded out the top five.

Ruairi Kavanagh, the editor of, said that Lidl's rapid climb up the rankings showed that retail is becoming recognised as a serious industry for graduates.

"When you have a company like Lidl in the top ten, it shows that it has kind of changed the perception of what a career in retail is," he said.

He also said that the top ten showed that graduates were looking at areas where they knew employment would be available, although he added that it was "interesting to have the public sector in there as well, which has been absent for the last number of years".
