Sinclair to help deliver value to Chinese kiwifruit crop

Responding to increased demand driven by a consumer base with larger incomes, Chinese kiwifruit growers will put out a bigger crop this season. Sinclair, a company that provides labelling services and labelling machinery to kiwifruit packers, will help deliver that bigger crop to consumers.

"Chinese consumption of kiwifruit continues to grow as investors benefited from a booming market last year,” explained Jin Han, Regional Sales Manager of Sinclair. “So it will be another five to eight percent increase in production this year.” More companies are willing to invest in growing and marketing kiwifruit, and not just large companies, either. The influx of capital has meant more fruit and more business for all companies associated with the fruit – from packers to shippers and, like Sinclair, those that provide labelling services.

“Sinclair provides tray labelling machines and site service, like operator training, problem-shooting and machine maintenance,” said Han. “We also supply food-grade polyethylene labels to the kiwifruit segment with special adhesive to make sure the label will last until it's in the customer's hands.” Demand for their services is such that they have to carefully plan for customer orders far into the future. They've also invested in visual recognition to make labelling easier and more accurate, and their PE plastic is recyclable.

The nature of the market, however, presents challenges. With so many growers and brokers popping up trying to take advantage of a growing market, work orders are not always honoured. Those are the growing pains of a burgeoning market.

“There is a risk we take with every client, especially new ones,” said Han. “That will be the case for a long time, or at least until large companies dominate the market, because they are more serious.”
