Italy: The red chicory season has started at Geofur

"Sales are going down and this is due to the fact that there is still a lot of produce abroad and people buy less in Italy because of the crisis. The foreign countries that most appreciate red chicory are England, Germany, Austria, Spain and France," explains Cristiana Furiani, sales manager for Geofur

"We started with prices that were really below production costs, despite the fact that programmed volumes are 20% lower than last year to balance the foreign product. In addition, due to the abundant rainfall, sowing in July will not produce the quantities expected."

According to the sales manager, the Russian ban will also have a significant effect, as "many products that had been programmed a long time ago have been banned, and they will now flood the market at really low prices."

"This situation is yet another problem for a sector that is already dealing with the crisis. Underselling only increases losses and reduces marketable volumes. It's true that consumption is dropping in our country, but I truly don't understand why we should sell at a price below production costs."
