Israeli pomegranates now in markets

Harvesting of early variety pomegranates began this week in Israel, and supplies are now on the export market. But with the peak of the season still months away, supplies will take a while to ramp up.

“Early varieties of pomegranates are now available for export,” said Yogev Keidar of Agriver. “The Wonderful will start at the end of October and continue through February of next year.” The Wonderful, known for its sweetness, is Israel's main pomegranate variety. The start of its harvest marks the main part of the Israeli pomegranate season. The variety is popular in Europe and in Russia because its unique to Israel, so the relatively few big growers in Israel control supplies of it. This year, growers have plenty of acreage in anticipation of strong demand from both Europe and Russia.

“There are lots of pomegranates that come from Southern Europe, and this year they will not go to Russia, so prices in Russia will reflect that,” said Keidar. “The Wonderful variety has a specific season, which is at its peak in December, and no one else has it, so prices will still be good in Europe because it is unique. Then prices will come down in January and February.” During the peak of the season, it's estimated that Israeli growers will export about 20 containers of pomegranates every day.
