Honduras: Melon producers expect a good season

The outlook for the melon harvest is flattering because of the weather conditions announced for the end of this winter, especially for the last half of October, as the forecast is that there won't be excessive rains.

According to executives of companies linked to the cultivation and export of melon in the south of the country, the weather is one of the most important factors when planning the first harvest cycle, since the excessive rains delay planting the fruit between ten and fifteen days.

However, the executives added that the rainfall forecasts are favourable for this month so they have started to prepare some 6,200 acres of land for planting in Choluteca and Valle.

The executives said that the outlook on the international market was flattering, because the Honduran fruit market opened in Taiwan, one of the new destinations for the country, as well as the United States, Belgium, Germany, Netherlands, Spain, France, England and other countries.

Regarding the generation of foreign exchange through exports, packinghouses expect to make between $62 and $65 million dollars, more than the $62.5 million recorded in the 2013/2014 season.
