PEI Potatoes available in singles or bulk bags

Recent reports have stated that although Prince Edward Island is the Canadian province to find potatoes, it is near impossible to buy single potatoes produced in PEI in grocery stores. While the demand for PEI potatoes is big worldwide, the province in fact does offer single homegrown potatoes in their grocery stores.

“Most potatoes packaged in PEI are in bulk bags,” states Alex Docherty of Skyeview Farms in PEI, “That’s the way the customer wants them.” Customer demands are always heard such as upgrading packaging to a poly bag with a clear back to allow customers to negotiate the size, color and profile of packed potatoes.

The Skyeview farm has been in Docherty’s family since 1848 allowing for a wide variety of potatoes like Classic Russet, Icelandic, Dakota Pearl, Marcy and Dark Red Noraland to be grown. The farm also takes responsibility for packing the potatoes. “Packaging is computerized, including the bagging and weighing. Stones are removed automatically, but the potatoes are still sorted by hand.” While shipping locally to residents of PEI who prefer to pick up a 3lb or 5lb bag of potatoes, Skyeview also exports their potatoes or seeds to multiple places worldwide. “We ship to the U.S., Puerto Rico, Hong Kong, Costa Rica, Trinidad and Venezuela.”
