Collaboration by Enza Seeds, Berg Paprika and Veiling Zaltbommel

New red and yellow striped pepper attracts attention

There was a true pepper novelty to be admired at the AGF Detail in Houten. At the Veiling Zaltbommel stall Chris Groot of Enza Seeds and growers Wilfred and Monique can den Berg from Est attracted visitors with a new red and yellow striped pepper. "We are using 2014 to see if we can find the consumer with this pepper. Over the last few months we have done internal consumer tests at home and abroad. We are showing the public this pepper for the first time at this fair," says Chris Groot.

Wilfred van den Berg was happy to allocate a corner of his nursery for this new pepper. "We're always looking for something new and are trying to be definitive, outside of the large volumes. We could do that with this pepper, considering the responses. The pepper has attracted a lot of attention and a lot of people are immediately enthusiastic. We think that this pepper has a lot of potential," says the grower, who sells his produce through Veiling Zaltbommel.

The pepper doesn't yet have a concept name. Would a flame or tiger pepper be an option for this red and yellow striped variety/. "We're just calling it a present from Mother Nature at the moment," says Chris Groot. "There is a concept with this pepper that will be further developed over the course of the year. We have spoken with all parties in the chain and have developed a vision of what the route could look like. We believe we have a good foundation to start, but in the end the consumer has the final say."
