Niedersachsen: Minister Meyer receives data on organic farming

Last Saturday Christian Meyer, the Minister of Agriculture for the German state of Niedersachsen, received the new brochure 'Biomarkt Niedersachsen - marktcijfers 2014 - nieuwe kansen voor de biologische landbouw' (Niedersachsen Organic market - 2014 market numbers - new chances for organic farming) at the BioNord fair. Carolin Grieshop, the Directer of 'Kompetenzzentrum Ökolandbau Niedersachsen GmbH' (KÖN) (Organic farming centre of excellence Niedersachsen), handed Meyer sixteen pages filled with market - and structural information regarding organic farming and processing, reports the German website Gabot.de.

"This year our theme is 'new chances', because organic farming in this region has a great deal of potential," says Grieshop. Every year consumers are demanding more and more organic food, this explains the constant growth in the number organic supermarkets.

According to the most current numbers organic food is being grown on 75,039 hectares in the German state of Niedersachsen. This represents a slight increase of about 500 hectares since last year. Niedersachsen is particularly prolific in the field of organic eggs: around 30% of the German organic laying hens are in Niedersachsen.
