"Normal prices for greenhouse vegetables, but aubergines disappointing"

"Arrival of greenhouse vegetables is in full swing and trade is beginning to recover." States Jonathan Vandesande from export company Weiss. "The mood on the market is good, better than a month ago! We now have a larger assortment for export so more work and prices are also competitive compared to Spanish products."

Normal prices
He adds that the winter vegetable season has now finished completely. "That was disappointing due to the fact that there was no real winter, but we are satisfied with greenhouse vegetables right now. We do not expect wonderfully high prices and they are very normal for the time of year, though cucumbers are now a little more expensive. Aubergines are pretty disappointing with low prices between 50 to 80 cent. At the start they were higher but that quickly fell, probably due to more being produced than last year."

He also remarks that lettuce is also cheap just now. "Peak supply is usually April. Just now prices are around 10-12 cents for a heavy lettuce. Of course consumption is higher because of the weather, but there is also more produced. Every day between 10.000 and 15.000 boxes arrive at the auction." He is positive for the future. "Easter is around the corner so hopefully we will be busier, but that also depends on the weather."
