US (CA): Lettuce production ahead of schedule

Warm weather has accelerated production of lettuce from California's growers, but a lack of water has affected growers in the Central Valley.

“Desert deal supplies are ahead of schedule,” said Mark McBride of Coastline Produce. “We've had heavy supplies brought on by warm weather.” In terms of quality, he noted that the better quality will probably come from districts that have production coming on later. After the desert regions, production will come online in Huron and then the Central Valley. The latter regions, though, have felt the brunt of the state's water shortages.

“Several growers in the Huron district reduced or did not plant lettuce because of the water situation, and we expect fewer growers in the fall,” said McBride. “The water situation will also be major in the Central San Joaquin Valley.”
