With the goal of introducing improvements to the production chain of organic bananas, and consequently the quality of life of small producers, the municipality of Sullana, along with other institutions, is promoting the development and spread of new technologies.
According to a local report, organic bananas have become a valuable alternative in recent years for the improvement of the financial situation of thousands of small producers in the valley of Chira, where 90% of Peru's organic bananas are grown by approximately 6,000 small growers.
Institutions such as the NGOs Swisscontact, OIKOS and Solidaridad; the Chira Association and the company DOLE, strive for small producers to make more efficient use of irrigation water and to adequately fertilise their plantations to make them more competitive.
The meetings for this project will take place in a demonstration plot located in the municipality of Mallaritos, which has 2.6 hectares of bananas grown using two cultivation methods, where irrigation is carried out by means of both hoses and micro sprinkling.
