Retailer Lidl has responded to a recent protest held by farmers outside its branch in Loughboy, Kilkenny on Saturday, at which farmers bought cheap vegetables and handed them out to people for free.
Staff were unhappy with the conduct of some of those attending the protest, to which Gardai were eventually called. A spokesperson for Lidl, Aoife Clarke, says that the demonstration was disruptive.
“While Lidl respects the farmers right to protest we cannot condone the verbal abuse levied at our staff, especially store staff who have no part to play in purchase or pricing of products,” said Ms Clarke.
“The disruption and intimidation to our shoppers was particularly unwelcome. We would like to thank all the customers who have expressed their support for the manager and his staff.
“Lidl has also publicly stated on several occasions that suppliers and growers are being paid the agreed prices for their produce and Lidl is bearing the cost of this promotion.”
