Mexico: Tangancicuaro ranks second in raspberry production

Tangancicuaro has become the second raspberry producer of the state of Michoacan thanks to the determination of its agricultural producers who decided to invest, adopt new farming methods and open their land to new varieties.

The municipalities with the highest production in the state are Los Reyes, with an annual output of 975 tonnes, Tangancicuaro, 900 tonnes and Periban with 325 tonnes.

These municipalities' production allow the state of Michoacan to rank third at the national level in the production of this berry, which generates more than 171 million pesos in revenues for the state.

Jalisco is the largest producer with a production of more than 380.5 million pesos (13.493.28 tonnes), followed by the state of Baja California with a production worth 238.9 million pesos (4,640 tonnes).

According to the latest statistical report provided by the State Office of Information for the State's Sustainable Rural Development (OEIDRUS), Michoacan is the third best raspberry producer in the country, with 2.467.50 tonnes.

There has been a steady increase in the crops of berries in Mexico.

Raspberry has become a very good option for producers and agribusiness due to its higher profitability, its rapid return of profit - starting the second year - and its demand of intensive labour as 900 workers are required per hectare.
