Italy: Good demand for blood oranges - prices in line with 2012

"Despite the fact that the Tarocco variety has also arrived on the market, sales are still slow, as they were in 2012. The foreign market though is very interested in blood oranges," says Sebastiano Cosentino, owner of a company in Lentini (Sicily).

"We have already shipped the first blood oranges to Germany, Austria and Sweden and our usual markets in Northern Europe are already asking for more. If we can differentiate our products, these countries will continue to buy our oranges."

"Prices are in line with last year, even though quantities are still low. On the domestic market prices are a little lower, but sales do not increase. Consumption on the domestic market is slow for all kinds of fruit."

"Sales of blood oranges are on their way down, also because there is more produce from Campania and Puglia and prices of Spanish oranges are very competitive," concludes Sebastiano Cosentino.
