Claudio Gorini (AL.MA)

Italy: Slow market all round, including pineapples

"Looking at historical records, I think that the pineapple market will become more lively the week right before Christmas and the following week. Things will then slow down again in January."

This is the assessment of Claudio Gorini, sales manager for AL.MA., a company which has been working with Milan's fresh produce market for over 20 years and specialising in the import and export of fresh, exotic and counter-seasonal fruit.

Gorini confirms what was reported by Rens Allewelt from Fruitpoint concerning the low availability of pineapples at Christmas and at the beginning of 2014.

"Currently the market is slow for all products, and therefore also for pineapples. At the moment it is even difficult to sell produce arriving by air. We received Venecia pineapples on 4th December, priced at €7 per package."
