Larger potato yields for French and British potato growers

Because of the increase in growing area in spring and larger harvest yields the potato harvest in France has improved in 2013 from the previous year which was weak. Also in Great Britain a better potato harvest is expected in 2013 than last year.

According to the French trade union of potato producers UNPT and the French potato committee CNIPT the harvest in France with 5.24 million tonnes this year is 11.6% larger than in 2012. Compared to the five year average the harvested quantity increased by 8.1%.

Based on a provisional estimate in Great Britain this year 5.5 million tonnes of potatoes was harvested, compared to last year which was only 4.5 million tonnes. The British market experts, however, point out that the harvest of this year is still under the level of the years before 2011. In 2009 6.2 million tonnes were harvested and in 2010, 5.8 million tonnes. People talked about a bad potato harvest in 2011 with 4.1 million tonnes just as they did in 2012.
