Peru: Piura to export organic bananas to Europe

The organic banana producers from the Bruno Manuel Suarez Organic Producers Association (Asprosol) in Piura will accomplish their dream of exporting to European markets, after the business plan, monitored and partly funded by Agroideas' Compensation for Competitiveness Program, was implemented. 49 producers from Asprosol were benefited.

"Becoming a strategic ally of sustainable business has allowed us to implement these kinds of plans in order to increase productivity for export. This is an example of why small and medium sized farmers seeking to improve their income and quality of life through the production of their crops should partner," he declared.

In turn, the coordinator of Asprosol's Business Plans, Yesy LalupĂș, said that, thanks to the Agroideas Program, four processing facilities and four and a half kilometres of cable satellite to transport organic bananas from the cultivation area to the processing facilities had been built.

The program also facilitates the purchase of production inputs for the producers, such as a truck or equipment, as well as obtaining certifications to increase the organic production's added value on the market.

In this sense, she projected that the turnover from exports of bananas to the European eco market would be higher than $700,000 dollars by the end of next year. To achieve this, more than 125,000 cases of the product must be sold in 2014.

She also said that, in addition to the money they'd make from the sale of their product in the European market, they would also receive a dollar per box thanks to the Fairtrade label.

"If we sell 125,000 boxes of organic bananas in 2014, we might also make $125,000 through the Fairtrade label; an amount that would be allocated for the development of social projects that would benefit the farmers who make up the association," she concluded.
