Spain: New early strawberry variety developed in Huelva

A new strawberry variety developed in Huelva, currently called A8-16-2, as it has no commercial name yet, is being tested by the association Fresas Nuevos Materiales (FNM) with the planting of over 100,000 units.

According to the technical director of FNM, Antonio Refoyo, the goal is to market this new variety in 2015, and he stressed that it is "very interesting because of its strength, early production and very good quality."

This is the fifth variety developed by the company after the Coral, Primoris, Antilla and Niebla. About these, Refoyo stated that "the first one didn't work out commercially; however, the Primoris and the Antilla have seen an increase in their production volumes this campaign, with 45,000 and 14,000 tonnes respectively."

The Niebla variety is still in the experimental stage, although "it has the potential to work commercially, as it is a real all-rounder meeting every requirement quite well and offering good production volumes throughout the entire campaign."

As for the new variety, he mentioned "it would be an earlier production than the Niebla, with a small plant, but with fruit of a good size and easy to harvest."

Fresas Nuevos Materiales is an entity formed in 1999 by companies associated under Freshuelva with the goal of obtaining unique varieties for the province of Huelva and reduce foreign dependency.
