Drivers directed completely via transport app with Windows 8

Euro Gijbels automates logistic process

After automating the purchase process at Euro Gijbels in recent months, there has also been investment in the logistic process in order to run at optimal capacity. The IT manager of Euro Gijbels, Gert Thora, explained that they began this development over six months ago. "Right now the whole logistic process is automated. All drivers travel with a new Nokia Lumia and have Windows 8 installed. We have developed a system to run with this GSM where drivers can receive all the information they need."

Completely controlled automatically
"Many in our industry still work with the classic PDA's, but that equipment is actually outdated. Windows 8 is brand new and we are innovative," he enthuses. "We use all the features of the phone. The camera and light are used by drivers to read with at night. QR codes are read so the driver has to make as little movement as possible. For example, with the GSM sensor we can see where the driver is. If a driver arrives at a customer he can 'scan' them to receive all the important delivery information like which gate to go to, which code to use etc. They are directed completely with this special transport application."

Gert states that Euro Gijbels normally run 21 lorries. "However we have 30, so on a busy day, and we have plenty of those so close to Christmas, more lorries are used. Before the logistic investment, drivers would be given a paper with a route planning, but the problem was that we must always send the same driver to the same place because they knew all the specific codes and client information. Generally deliveries occur at night when the clients are not actually there so you had to know everything. We can now send somebody new after just a 30 minute explanation. All information is passed on through photos and can then be adjusted live. Say that a driver has to go back to a client, we can request that from here. We have a dispatcher and a route planner here, this person is present throughout the day and follows everything. The application is linked directly to the Tom Tom and connected live to us. When a driver leaves one customer he is automatically navigated to the next customer."

Internal changes in the production hall
A lot of changes had to also be made to the internal logistic process. "There are many different products on pallets which all require codes. We installed mobile I-pad kiosks at different points in the production hall, combined with label printers. When a client is ready he just goes to the I-pad kiosk and scans his order in with the I-pad's camera. The I-pad automatically goes to the right screen for the label and prints them out via the mobile printer. There stands a QR code which is applied to the appropriate item. Drivers can then scan-in and scan-out goods with the clients. It has been quite a change in procedure to make this scanning possible," he explained, "but we have saved a lot of time here. We used to work with paper and often realised that pallets had been forgotten, or the wrong pallets had been loaded. These mistakes had to be rectified and that cost a lot of time. Such cases should hardly ever happen again."

"We started the labelling process in the production halls, six months ago. Everything had to be labelled the right way before we could go live with the second phase, the logistic app. There was also a big advantage for our clients: empties used to be collected up to three days after delivery, but now they can be taken away the same night without mistakes and everything becomes much faster as communication is improved. Empties are still cause for concern in our industry. EPS boxes are quite valuable," concluded Gert.
