Babyleaf Kale poised for breakthrough in UK following US success

Sweet-tasting and easy to cook in two minutes, Babyleaf Kale is a vegetable that has made a big impact in the US over the last 12 months and looks set to do the same in the UK, thanks to an ever-greater awareness of the health benefits that kale – a Superfood – can deliver.

To further stimulate interest in the product, CN Seeds has recently launched Jagallo Nero, a distinctively-shaped Babyleaf Kale with eye-catching serrated leaves that has proved highly successful in the US market. The product will be available for commercial trials in the UK and Europe early next year.

According to Craig Thomas from CN Seeds, the principal point of difference between Babyleaf Kale and full-sized kale is that the Babyleaf version only needs to be blanched for a couple of minutes to be ready to serve and boasts a sweeter taste than its larger counterpart. “There’s a lot of awareness in the media of kale thanks to the work being done by celebrity chefs using it as an ingredient in their recipes,” he explained. “Kale has always been there, but with Babyleaf Kale it’s almost as if it was a new product.”

The phenomenal performance in the North American market looks likely to be repeated in Australia, New Zealand and the Scandinavian countries, where CN Seeds said it had seen a recent upsurge in interest.

CN Seeds will be highlighting its work with Babyleaf Kale and a range of other products from a prominent location at the forthcoming Fruit Logistica 2014 trade exhibition, which takes place in Berlin, Germany from 5-8 February 2014. The company will be present in a central position near exhibition centre Messe Berlin’s south entrance, located in Hall 1.2, Stand A.17.

Babyleaf Kale will be one of the stand highlights, while other introductions for the show will include wild rocket Monza and improved coriander Cadiz.
