Organic banana producers from the district of Marcavelica, in the province of Sullana, Piura, expect their export volumes to increase this year, despite the recent plague of Red Spot.
The goal is to reach 115,000 tonnes; 9,000 more than in 2012.
Milton Gonzaga Ramírez, president of the Association of Organic Banana Growers, explained that the spread of Red Spot reduced export volumes by up to 50% during the months of June and July.
In spite of this situation, the acreage for organic banana cultivation has increased by 70 hectares this year, with the production starting in January.
The main destinations are currently France, the United States, Canada and Germany and the objective is to enter Italy and Japan.
In 2012, a total of 106,000 tonnes of organic bananas were exported and the main destinations were the United States and Europe.
