Alessandro Silvestrelli (Rijk Zwaan Italua)

Italy: The fight against diseases still one of the main challenges for genetic research

Alessandro Silvestrelli, Country Manager Rijk Zwaan Italy says the seed market is dynamic, diversified and oriented towards innovation, despite a little setback. "We feel that the capability to innovate is the main element for future challenges starting from 2014."

Problems
"The main problems are the sale of the finished products, prices, margins and money for investments. All of this could keep the seed sector from developing."

Among the negative factors influencing the sector, Silvestrelli talks about illegal reproduction and scioning of patented varieties. "At the same time, this is a further test that the sector is facing on the road against illegal practices."

Opportunities
"Diseases and the development of seed technologies are the challenges we must face with genetic research," adds Alessandro Silvestrelli. "Some segments are always evolving and offer new business development opportunities such as the fresh-cut range or the quality-organoleptic aspects of the products."

Objectives at a global level
Rijk Zwaan, is growing globally and has recently opened new research stations in the Netherlands, Spain and Turkey in addition to production centres in Tanzania and Mexico. Among its corporate objectives, Rijk Zwaan includes global challenges such as the fight against malnutrition and obesity, the reduction of the impact on the ecosystems and the supply of sufficient quantities of healthy food for an expanding population.

A strategic part of this mission is the development of better varieties for producers and markets in specific areas of the world. Afrisem, the African branch of Rijk Zwaan, is an example of this, as it is providing growers with hybrid varieties and improved cultivation techniques.

Rijk Zwaan chose to promote its project with the new "Sharing a Healthy Future" slogan as well as with an updated logo and house style.
