Spanish onion production will amount to 1.2 million tonnes in 2013

Today, the Assembly of the Onion Producers Association of Castilla -la Mancha, PROCECAM, will analyse the development of the 2013 campaign to date, the prospects for the coming months, and this vegetable's situation in the new CAP, among other things. Castilla-La Mancha is the largest onion producing community in Spain with 65% of the national total, which will amount to 1.2 million tonnes this year.

The onion growers of Castilla-La Mancha, grouped in PROCECAM, will analyse the sector's current situation, production and storage, as well as the prospects until the end of the season. According to the manager of the Association, Luis Fernando Rubio, the results of the current season to date are positive, but some producers are wary of the coming months.

The Assembly will be completed with two presentations, one of which is about the future of the CAP 2014-2020 and the other one is about the developments of agricultural insurance for onions and chives in 2014.

The 2013 La Mancha Quality Brand Ambassador distinctive will be awarded to the Minister of Agriculture of Castilla-La Mancha, Maria Luisa Soriano, in the Assembly, which will be held in Villarrobledo , Albacete.

According to PROCECAM, onion production in Spain, the largest producer in the EU, will amount to 1.2 million tonnes in 2013. 65% of the national total is produced in Castilla-La Mancha.

According to data maintained by the Directorate General of Customs and processed by FEPEX, onion exports, up September 2013, amounted to 202,922 tonnes, 9% more than the same period in 2012. In terms of value, onion exports amounted to 83 million Euro, 60% more than in the last year.

By region, Valencia is the largest exporter with 128,858 tonnes, followed by Castilla-La Mancha with 22,868 tonnes and Andalusia with 20,301 tonnes.

The main destination of Spanish onion is the United Kingdom with 70,111 tonnes, followed by Germany with 56,492 tonnes and France with 21,408 tonnes.

PROCECAM is one of the 31 associations integrated to FEPEX.
