France pays the most for Spanish melon

France is the country that has paid the most for melons that Spain exported between January 1 and September 30, a period of time that includes this fruit's campaign. In average, the French paid 0.883 Euro per kilo of the fruit, while the average price paid to Spain for their exported melons was 0.71 Euro per kilo, according to data from the Department of Customs and Excise of the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness, via Fepex.

The price of melons exported by Spain in the first nine months of 2013, 0.71 Euro per kilo, has increased in value by 18.33 percent compared to the same period in 2012, 0.60 Euro per kilo. 

The average price paid for the melon by countries of the European Union (EU) was 0.70 Euro per kilo; meanwhile non-EU countries paid an average price of 0.97 Euro per kilo.

Out of the 20 EU countries that imported the highest amounts of melon in the period under review, France, as was previously stated, paid the best, 0.88 Euro per kilo, followed by Belgium (0.80) and Italy (0.78).

Austria follows in fourth place, as they paid an average of 0.76 Euro per kilo throughout the first nine months of the year.

From a list of the top twenty importers, Estonia was the country that paid the least for Spanish melons, 0.422 Euro per kilo, before it, the Czech Republic (0.531), Portugal (0.572) and Poland, which paid an average of 0.607 Euro per kilo.

Germany, Spain's biggest customer
Germany is by far the biggest customer for the melon. 25.7 percent of this fruit's exports, a total of 100.56 million kilos, representing 66.88 million Euro at an average price of 0.665 Euro per kilo, were sent to Germany.

Total exports of melons, in the period under review, amounted to 391.29 million kilos, 3.8 percent less when compared to the same period of 2012. This country ranked first for volume purchases.

France was the country that ranked second in the volume of melons purchased from Spain, with 89.25 million kilos, for which they paid 78.89 million Euro.

The United Kingdom ranks third in volume purchases as they bought 61.31 million kilos of melons, and sixteenth in price ranking as they paid a total of 37.34 million and an average price of 0.61 Euro per kilo.
