Fred Rennen, Staay-Hispa:
"Good market for Brazilian melons after hard start"
Trade in melons is presently good. Prices for all varieties are at a good level and that is a change from the beginning of the season. "The start of the melon season was very hard. In one week there were enormous amounts arriving which was not good for the market and it took a few weeks for the market to stabilise," explained commercial director Fred Rennen from Staay-Hispa, who market melons throughout Europe under the brands Mossoro, Samba and Brazil.
"Over the last couple of weeks the market has revived, and demand is good in the run up to Christmas. Water melons are popular and high in price and during this time we also have more requests for Cantaloupe and Galia melons than are available," said Fred. According to the importer, volume is in line with expectations. "Demand is broad, here, it is as good as it is in Germany, but there is no country which really stands out."
The commercial director is also satisfied with the quality. "At the start of the season they were not at their best, but now they are. I heard that some producers had problems with water supply but that has not yet created any problems. The volumes received are about the same as last year and I don't see any problems with supply over the next few weeks. We are presently busy with preparation for the Costa Rican melon season which will begin at the end of January with water melons, followed by cantaloupe and yellow melons and we hope that this runs seamlessly into the Brazilian season."
