Decrease onion production Europe

Due to the wet spring Europeans saw the production of onions decrease by 6% this year to 5.2 million tons, according to the large producers. Spain is the exception in this. Germany, Denmark, France, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom suffered losses. This opened the possibility for Spain to export 1.2 million tons (+1% compared to 2012) to the Netherlands and 1.04 million tons to other countries, as per Interfel S.A.
(Interprofession des fruits et legumes)

Representatives of production countries of onions met in Paris at the start of this month at their annual event Euronion, where they have the opportunity to discuss
expectations and practice.

In France despite an increase of 5% compared to the previous season the production reached 318,000 tons. The available supply, however was 277,000 tons (a decrease of 15%) this was, amongst other reasons, the result of a late harvest in certain regions. France nevertheless keeps the seventh place as producer in Europe.
