The U.S, Spain, and The Netherlands are the biggest buyers of Peruvian avocado

United States, The Netherlands and Spain are the three biggest destinations for Peruvian avocado. According to the Association of Exporters (ADEX), they accounted for 87.6 percent of total exports between January and September.

In total, this fruit's exports amounted to 113,605 tonnes in volume and $179.4 million dollars in value between January and September 2013, 33.2 percent more when compared to the same period of 2012.

Adex stated that the substantial increase in shipments abroad was due to the increase in demand for agricultural products in the U.S. market, which grew by 47.3 percent, and in Europe, especially in The Netherlands and in Spain, countries whose shipments increased by 41.5 percent and 14.9 percent, respectively.

Adex also noted that there were exports to other countries to which, last year, there had been minimum or no exports at all, such as Belgium, Sweden, Lithuania, Mali, Honduras, Bulgaria, Indonesia and Ecuador.

Peru, with almost four percent of the world's total production, is considered the world's seventh largest producer of avocados. Estimates are that this fruit's production volume will increase by 17.2 percent at the end of the year thanks to the country's good climatic conditions for the cultivation and harvesting of the fruit.

The Lima region has the highest production with 25 percent of the national total, followed by the regions of La Libertad, Junín and Ica, which contribute 21 percent, 15 percent and 15 percent, respectively.
