91 percent of the bananas come from Ecuador, Colombia and Costa Rica. Only 130 tonnes of bananas were imported from other EU-countries in 2012.
The import quantities have decreased, as well as the consumption of bananas. Whilst the Germans in financial year 2008/2009 still consumed 890,000 tonnes of bananas, the quantity, according to provisional figures of BLE, was 854,000 tonnes during financial year 2011/2012. This corresponds to 10.5 kg per head - in 2008/2009 this was still 10.8 kg per head.
Nevertheless the banana remains the favourite fruit bar one by the Germans. Only apples are consumed more (25,9 kg per head in 2011/2012)).
