Too early to make a forecast for 2014

Italy: Carrot sowing coming to an end in Sicily

Carrot sowing in Sicily is 90% complete. "The situation seems fine and quantities are more or less like last year. The mild weather and the right amount of rain are favouring growth, though it is still too early to make a forecast for 2014."

This is the statement of Massimo Pavan, deputy chairman of the New Ispica PGI Carrot Consortium and sales manager for Pef srl.

Currently, the situation of the Italian market is not very dynamic: "despite the 30% increase in the Ferrara area, yields are lower than normal. The Fucino area (Abruzzo) still has a lot of volumes available but the quality is not very good because of the abundant rainfall of the last period. The Fiumucino area (Lazio) recorded the same quantities as last year and some operators are starting to harvest."

"Bigger volumes were stocked abroad than in previous year, but the market seems more active and so consumption is slightly higher too."

"It is too early to make any type of forecast. The entire season is still ahead of us and we must assess the shelf-life of the refrigerated produce abroad first," concludes Pavan.
