US (CA): Cauliflower fares well under favorable weather

As cauliflower production transitions south, growers are reaping the rewards of a season that's been void of bad weather. Those favorable conditions have made for good quantities of vegetables this year.

“For the most part, volumes have been steady throughout the season,” said Art Barrientos, vice president of harvesting for Ocean Mist Farms. Harvesting for Ocean Mist has all but wrapped up for them in Salinas, and they will soon transition their cauliflower production to the Yuma area and the Imperial Valley. Barrientos is expecting to be fully finished in Salinas by the end of the month, and production should ramp up in the Coachella Valley shortly before then. Reflecting on the Salinas season that's wrapping up, Barrientos said it's been a good one, and he credits good weather for that.

“Overall quality has been exceptionally nice this season due to favorable growing weather throughout the season,” said Barrientos. “The weather has really been ideal for cauliflower and most other commodities.” Good weather and steady volumes have been matched with good demand. That's resulted in brisk movement, and, according to Barrientos, prices have, in general, been higher than those from the previous year.

“Overall sales have been good,” said Barrientos. “Going forward, we are anticipating a smooth transition to the desert with supply matching demand for the holiday pull and into the new year.”
