Mexico makes top 10 organic producers

Conference speaker, Ruben Quintero Sanchez, said that, with a wide variety of crops, Mexico is among the top 10 organic producing countries.

He stressed the importance of organic farming in his "Technological development of organic agriculture as the foundation of agricultural sustainability" conference within the V Agricultural International Forum of Jalisco.

The Director of Planning and Natural Heritage Conservation of Michoacan said that 37 percent of the global area used for organic production was in Australia, followed by Argentina and China, but that Mexico was also a very important country in this type of farming worldwide.

He noted that Mexico grows a great variety of organic products, but is primarily known for its production of avocados, coconut or mangoes.

He also added that the world's market for organic products is stronger by the day, because people are looking for healthier options.

Quintero Sanchez considered it was urgent to find new technologies to approach nutrition with organic products, i.e. using nature to control pests and provide optimal conditions in food quality, with specific rules for ecological production throughout the world.

He said that pests and diseases in the field could be attacked with plant extracts, "we have all the varieties needed for any type of problem affecting crops."
