Moorehouse & Mohan

Last of UK potatoes lifted this week

With temperatures dropping and the threat of bad weather looming, Moorhouse and Mohan have lifted the last of this season's potato crop, this week. Colin Galbraith from the company says it is a similar situation throughout the country. Although some onion growers have not been so fortunate.

"Some onion growers deliberately left the onions in the ground because they were too small and now they struggling to harvest them." The growers are being forced to lift them wet, bringing them into storage covered in mud and insects.

According to Galbraith the potato trade in the UK is steady and has been so for a few weeks, there are also potatoes being exported to The Netherlands. This is due to wet conditions In Europe, it is a similar situation with carrots.

The Russian market remains closed for the time being to any EU potatoes, the domestic and Ukrainian crop has been fairly good, but exports to Russia remain a possibility.
