Sunshine Coast horticulturalist receives top Australian macadamia award

Maroochy Research Facility’s Shane Mulo has received the most prestigious honour in the Australian macadamia industry – the 2013 Norman R. Greber Memorial Trophy - for his outstanding contribution to the industry over the last 12 months.

His pioneering work with the Australian macadamia industry began in 1997. He went on to develop a number of key industry initiatives that have helped to change the way Aussie macadamia growers farm by providing them with the tools they need to improve their farm productivity and efficiency. These have included farm management recording and decision support systems, economic analysis and financial planning tools, industry on-farm benchmarking, best practice and grower information products and services.

It was his pivotal role in developing the ground-breaking ‘macSmart’ industry website, which has pioneered the use of ‘instructional’ grower videos, that helped him to secure the Norm Greber nomination. Shane was one of the driving forces behind the macSmart project, which is arguably one of the most innovative extension projects currently in existence.

“Shane’s impact on the industry has been nothing short of exceptional, and this award is acknowledgement of his outstanding commitment to tackling the industry’s No1 priority over the last twelve months – lifting productivity.” said Jolyon Burnett, CEO of the peak industry body, the Australian Macadamia Society.

Mr. Mulo said he got an enormous amount of satisfaction out of the fact that much of his work was now starting to ‘hit its straps’. “The data we’re now generating is giving the industry good insight into where we’re at and where we’re heading.

“We’re getting great feedback about macSmart from growers. It’s really satisfying when a grower comes up and says ‘I got a lot out of that.’”
