Strong demand for Spanish Blanquilla pears in Israel

Despite a 10 day delay in the start of the harvest, Catalonia's pear season has arrived with larger production volumes than last season, even though hailstorms had caused damages in the plantations. Unlike apples, which have been more affected, "the quality of pears is just as good as always," affirms Xavier Juvillà, commercial director of Viyefruit.

"At the moment we are mainly working with Blanquilla pears, which we marketed both in Spain and in the export market. Our main destinations are Israel and Cyprus by sea and Greece and Italy by road."

According to Xavier, Israel's demand is very strong right now, with very satisfactory prices being paid for the Blanquilla. "Israel is normally able to supply its own domestic market, but there has been a drop in Blanquilla production volumes this season, and as a result, large imports are being made. Furthermore, after finishing off with its own production, Greece also started importing Blanquillas over the past few weeks. Thus, Blanquilla pears are reaching higher prices than the Conference this season, taking into account that the total volumes of the former have been much lower than the latter in recent years."

With plantations in Lleida, Tarragona and Huesca, Viyefruit also produces and markets stonefruit in the summer, apples, kiwis and quinces under its three brands, PAULA, ZESCINCA and PEROTY. It has several certifications, such as Global G.A.P., IFS, BRC and Integrated Production.

"Last week we finished with the Hayward kiwi harvest, a variety which will be marketed until mid-December," Xavier points out. Viyefruit handles around 1,000 tonnes of this kiwi, characterised by its lack of fuzziness and an intense sweet flavour which, according to Viyefruit's commercial director, "always results in satisfied customers."
