The design will require an extension of 1,000 hectares (to 2350 hectares) to double the country’s current production of 30,000 tonnes.
This will provide work for 3,000 people. There are 47 packaging departments with 50 employees each. The banana industry employs 4,050 people and over 3,300 trucks transport the bananas to consumers.
President Mamadou Omar Sall has stated that the Senegalese need to consume their own bananas to support national production.
For some time now, the Senegalese banana is known as a product of poor quality compared with that of the Ivory Coast. Transport to the consumer is said to cause the damage. This needs to be improved.
