Sicilian company "Palumbo Più" has worked on the domestic market for over 20 years thanks to its production of Canary yellow and Cantaloupe melons, artichokes, peppers and courgettes. These last two, in particular, are sold between October and March.
Thanks to its associates, Palumbo Più processes and distributes around 500 tonnes of yellow and red peppers and 350 tonnes of dark courgettes every year.
Domenico "Mimmo" Palumbo, sales manager, told FreshPlaza that "at the moment, even though quality is high, the market is stalling as there is no demand and prices are very low. We only sell when there are special offers, which do not cover production costs."
"We are convinced that things will improve from December onwards, as in winter we always manage to make a profit. In addition, this year autumn has been rather unusual as temperatures are above average, so much so, that production is still depending on those areas that are usually done by now."
The produce is cleaned, selected and packed in the company's facilities - 1,000 sq m equipped with cold storage units and processing lines. The products and the packaging centre have the GlobalGAP certification.

The produce is supplied in 40x60 cardboard boxes or 30x50 plastic crates depending on the clients' needs - most being retailers and markets in Northern Italy.
