The experience of farmers from several Cuban provinces demonstrated the effectiveness of the low altitude plantain clone obtained in the National Research Institute (INIVIT) of the municipality of Santo Domingo Villa Clara.
It is the PV 06 30, achieved by the biotechnological processes of mutants of the Zanzibar variety (AAB), which has a high yield potential and greater resistance to the damaging effects caused by the winds and the attack of black sigatoka.
Its commercial certificate on the National Register of Varieties was patented in 2010, and one of its added features is its increase of production levels, as well as meeting the demands of a critical crop in the rise.
This clone is the result of the Breeding Program developed by the INIVIT for over 25 years with regards to the cultivation of plantain as a strategic food source given the preferences of the Cubans, and the ability to obtain them all year round.
In Cuba, the returns have been hit in recent years due to the acute influences of climate change, not to mention the devastating aftermath of several hurricanes.
Hence, the country is working on achieving a broad base of clones from INIVIT's potential Germplasm Bank.
