Maurice Koppen, Oakfield Champignons BV:

"Mushroom market repackages itself after disappointing demand in summer"

After a summer of slightly disappointing demand, the mushroom market has pulled up a little. This was said by director Maurice Koppen of mushroom company Oakfield Mushrooms from Stramproy, which is affiliated with the British organisation Oakfield Farm Products Limited. The nursery is Fair Produce certified and supplies white mushrooms, chestnut mushrooms, (king) oyster mushrooms and shiitakes, both regular and organic, among others.

"This week has been alright. The production is a little better at the moment, as is the quality," says Maurice. "You can see that the price improves towards the end of the week. At the moment the price of the white mushrooms, for the medium sorting is around 1.50 Euro. These are reasonable prices. It was mainly the orders from the retail market that were quite good this week, especially from England and Holland."

"The sales of the special varieties have also been quite good this season. Normally the end of November/ beginning of December is a quieter period, the calm before the storm of Christmas, but we have to see how it goes every year," says Maurice. "I look ahead to the coming months positively."
