Spain: Covirán expands in Portugal

Covirán, the Spanish distribution group, wants to double its business in Portugal over the next three years and expects to continue its international expansion in order to start operations in other countries.

"This is just the beginning, we will continue expanding, we will attract more partners, we'll have new local supermarkets in more municipalities and we're going to modernize our stores," said the company's CEO, Luis Osuna, during the inauguration of a new logistics platform in the Portuguese town of Sintra, attended by Portuguese suppliers, partners and local authorities.

The head of the company, which dates back to 1961 in Granada, said that they will probably start projects in other countries besides Portugal, which, to date, is their first experience outside of Spain.

"We have a long history in the retail sector in Portugal," said the CEO, who noted that Covirán generated wealth in Portuguese soil, because they buy 80% of their products from local suppliers.

Covirán has 1,359 employees in Portugal, where it's been since 2010, more than 200 partners, a network of 241 supermarkets and a turnover of over 11 million Euro, according to the company.

Including the facilities that the company inaugurated today, which will also host the company's administrative headquarters, the group has three logistics platforms in the country: in Aveiro (north), Algoz (south) and Sintra (centre).

Last year the company posted revenues of 575 million Euro in all of the Iberian Peninsula, and had a total workforce of 13,000 employees.
