It is beginning to become a trend: more and more farmers are renting out fertile land to hobby gardeners from the city. In the German town of Kamp Lintfort, families, couples or single people will soon be able to grow their own vegetables, reports rp-online.de.
The organic vegetable fields where this will become possible, next year, are part of organic farm Frohnenbruch owned by Klaus and Barbel Bird. Tobias Paulert (37) and Birger Brock (38) managed to win over the farmers with their idea 'field heroes'. The two young entrepreneurs and their company 'field heroes' in Ruh,r already rent out vegetable plots in Monchengladback, Dorsten, Bremershaven and Berlin.
If there is enough interest, the project is set to start in Kamp Lintfort with 25 farmers. A small organic plot per season costs 248 Euro, and a larger one will be 445 Euro. They will come supplied with seeds, watering cans and young plants. The idea: Klaus Bird prepares 40 to 80 square meter vegetable fields, and then hobby gardeners can sow and harvest from their rented plots around mid May to November.
"People used to know how to grow carrots, but the knowledge has been lost," said Tobias Paulert. "The classic vegetable patch from the 50's and 60's is now usually an ornamental garden or play area for children." With this project he and his business partner wish to allow people to remember where vegetables come from and how they end up on your plate.
