Spain: Small retailers sell more fruit and vegetables than supermarkets

According to data provided by the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, 40% of all fresh fruit and vegetables consumed in Spain between January and August this year were purchased from small retailers, while 36.5% was sold by supermarkets and self-services. 9% of the total was purchased at hypermarkets, 6% in street markets and 0.3% via home delivery.

The total consumption of fruits and vegetables during the period at hand reached 5,842 million kilos, of which 2,292 million corresponded to small retailers and 2,143 million kilos were purchased at supermarkets. 521.7 million kilos were sold at hypermarkets, 327.7 at street markets and 19.6 million were home-delivered.

By sub-sectors, 40% of all fruits consumed between January and August were purchased at small retailers and 37% at supermarkets and self-services. As for vegetables, 38% were sold by small retailers and 36% by supermarkets and self-services.
