“The core business activity of Sanvi will be to export grapes and other fresh fruits and vegetables to Europe, the U.S., Far Eastern countries and the Middle East,” said Sunny Saluja, director for the new company. India's grape harvest begins this month, and Saluja said they will begin exporting this season during the normal export window that stretches from November through April of next year. Though they face competition from South African and Israeli suppliers during that time, Saluja is confident they can expand into territories like China, Singapore, Hong Kong, Thailand and Indonesia as well as increase the share of Indian grapes in European countries like the U.K., Germany, France and the Netherlands.
The Pesticide residue in the grapes is one of the biggest issues when exported to the EU. It is one of the quality parameters before the importers accept the produce. During past export season, some of the exported consignments had the pesticide residue more than the maximum residue level (MRL). As a result, European Union ordered testing of pesticide residue in all the consignments. This action led to delay in sale of the produce in the market and also rejection of some consignment and is one of the issues hoped to be solved by this partnership.
“It's only a matter of time,” said Saluja, “before Sanvi will be a key name in the export of Indian fresh fruits and vegetables.”
