The Agricultural Research and Rural Extension Company of Santa Catarina (Epagri) together with Santa Catarina’s Hydrometeorology and environmental resources Information Center will be the first company in Brazil to install an automated system for the control of the population fluctuation of the Apple moth. The action is a technical and scientific cooperation between Epagri/Ciram and Pessl of Austria.
Thanks to this cooperation, Epagri/Ciram acquired seven agrometeorological stations to control the population fluctuation of pests in fruit trees and other crops on a daily basis.
The equipment will be implemented soon in apple orchards in the cities of São Joaquim, Caçador and Faiburgo and the Northern Planalto region in Brazil. Each equipment has a trap with synthetic pheromone, a substance capable of attracting males. After entering the trap, the insect is trapped in an adhesive plate. This plate is photographed in high resolution by multiple cameras and the images are sent via cell phone to a server. The results of the analysis of the images, with the number of individuals detected, will be available via the Internet, mobile and other devices.
