1,500 quintals of basil expected

Italy: Herb winter season starting at Azienda Agricola Autore

In the heart of the Eastern Sicily, Azienda Agricola Autore Giombattista isentirely dedicated to the production of herbs both in open fields and ingreenhouses (around 10,000 square metres) and basil, cultivated in 30,000 square metresof heated greenhouses.

Production covers the entire year andcomprises of all Sicilian herbs (Sicilian mint, oregano from the Hyblaen Mountains, etc.), basil, rosemary, sage,mint, oregano, bay, thyme, marjoram, chives, fennel, lemon balm and parsley.

The flagship product of the company is Genoa basil: “Given the increasing demandfor herbs, and basil in particular, we have planned to produce around 1,500quintals of basil in the winter season as well as 500 of mint, 50 of thyme and250 of coriander,” explains Giombattista Autore.

“The biggest demand is for loose produce for warehouse processing, but we canalso supply packed produce in 30 gram trays or 100 gram bunches in cardboard crates. Pricesare in line with the past two years.”

"The increasing trend in demand concernsboth Italy and foreigncountries like the Netherlands,Germany, Romania, Swedenand Belgium.Delivery times are within 24 hours in Italy and 48 hours abroad,”concludes Giombattista Autore.
