Edeka now also sells B-quality fruit and vegetables

Not only beautiful A-products, but also everything as made by nature: Rewe and Edeka endeavour to sell fruit and vegetables with cosmetic defects. Rewe experiences good results with lower prices in Austria and Edeka is starting a pilot test in Germany 'Keiner ist perfekt' (nothing is perfect).

Trading concern Rewe is selling for the first time Austria fruit and vegetables with cosmetic faults its supermarkets. The last few days apples, carrots and potatoes with a 'different' appearance have been available at lower prices. "The reactions of the clients are very positive," a spokeswoman from Rewe said to the German newspaper 'Handelsblatt'. In Germany at the same time, a four week long pilot test under the motto 'nobody is perfect' is running at Edeka supermarkets.

Rewe International in Austria consists of the supermarkets Billa, Merkur and ADEG. Since 2 October all of them offer 'non-conform' fruit and vegetables under their own brand 'Wunderlinge'.

According to the company fruit and vegetables, which because of visual shortcomings could not be sold, although as far as the quality is concerned there is nothing wrong and the taste was good. Rewe will now start with apples, carrots and potatoes from Austria, but the supply will change with the season. A "concrete measure against the throw-away culture."
