Uruguay: First shipment of oranges to the U.S. underway

The citrus adviser of Uruguay's Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries (MGAP), Federico Montes, confirmed that the first five containers with oranges of the Valencia variety will leave this Wednesday from the Port of Montevideo bound to Philadelphia, United States. This will be the first shipment since the U.S. market became accessible for Uruguay.

The processing of the fruit from five companies, Citrícola Salteña, Urudor, Milagro, Forbel and Naranjales Guarino, has started in a plant in Paysandú. After the harvest, the fruit goes through the processes of packing and cooling.

Montes explained, "This experience will allow for the testing of quarantine containers against fruit flies, which maintain temperatures between 1.2 and 1.6°C, as well as of port logistics and the commercialisation network."

"It entails the accomplishment of the goal we had set for 2013 in the Strategic Plan for the citrus sector and we will start making plans for 2014," concluded Montes.
